Last chance saloon

The Yonex India Open which kicked off with the qualifying rounds on Tuesday, represents the last chance for shuttlers to book their tickets to the London Olympics.

The OSIM BWF World Superseries tournament is the final competition of the Olympic qualifying period which ends on April 29 with the May 3 world rankings to be used as the cut off mark.

Newly crowned Asian champion China’s Chen Jin, who is on the verge of replacing Danish great Peter Gade as the fourth ranked player in the world can book his Olympic ticket with another solid performance in New Delhi.

Being ranked fourth in the world during the Olympic qualifying period would mean he will join compatriots Lin Dan and Chen Long in London.

He will start his campaign against Hong Kong Wong Wing Ki and faces a potential semi-final match against Gade.

Top seed Lee Chong Wei will look to cement his position at the top of the world rankings by defending his title.

Meanwhile, in the qualifying matches, up and coming Chinese talent Chen Xiao Jia (above), continued her good form to book a place in the maindraw which begins on Wednesday.

Chen Xiao Jia created a storm at the Asian Championships when she knocked out second seeded compatriot Wang Xin and fifth seed Saina Nehwal before losing to eventual champion Li Xuerui in the semi-finals.

She will meet Indonesia’s Aprilla Yuswandari in the opening round with a second round meeting against European champion Tine Baun on the cards. If the Chinese shuttler can keep up her good form she will likely face Saina for a place in the semi-finals.

Joining her in the maindraw are Thailand’s Nichaon Jindapon an Indians Neha Pandit and Arundhati Pantawane.

Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov (right), reached the maindraw of the men’s singles and will play another qualifier in Singapore’s Ashton Chen.
