In the qualifiers in Ballart, Australia, the New Zealand team had James Eunson-Michael Fowke to thank for securing their place in the Thomas cup after they defeated Ben Mccarthy-Raymond Tam 21-19, 8-21, 21-19, in the second doubles to give them a 3-2 win.
The win meant New Zealand topped the round-robin group with maximum points after earlier defeating both Tahiti and New Caledonia 5-0.
Australia, who also defeated Tahiti and New Caledonia 5-0, finished second while New Caledonia were third after their 4-1 win over Tahiti.
In the Uber Cup, only three teams – Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia competed for a place in the Finals, which will be held at Wuhan, China, from May 20-27.
As expected Australia and New Zealand both trounced New Caledonia 5-0 to set-up what in essence was a final when they paired off on Sunday.
Michelle Chan Ky (above), gave the Kiwis the lead after beating Victoria Na 21-8, 21-18, but the hosts then hit back to win the next four ties for a 4-1 victory and a berth to the Uber Cup Finals.
