Rio de Janeiro is set to host the 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games 5-21 August.  Elected as host city during the 121st IOC session held in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 2nd 2009 this will be the first city in South America to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rio2016-venueRio2016-venue

Badminton is tentatively scheduled to take place 6-14 August in an already existing venue, Pavilion 4 of Riocentro (exhibition centre) with a capacity of 6,500 spectators.

The competition venues will be clustered in four zones – Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã – and connected by a high-performance transport ring.

Nearly half of the athletes will be able to reach their venues in less than 10 minutes, and almost 75 per cent will do so in less than 25 minutes.

Of the 34 competition venues, of which 18 are already operational, eight will undergo some permanent works, seven will be totally temporary and nine are being constructed as permanent legacy venues.

Badminton has been part of the Olympic Games since Barcelona 1992.There are 172 badminton players (86 men and 86 women) from more than 50 countries competing in badminton in the  Summer Games. 

RIO - Olympic Games 2016

Badminton will be  taking place at  Riocentro - Pavilion 4  in five categories – Men’s Singles (38 players), Women’s Singles (38  players), Men’s doubles (16 pairs), Women’s doubles (16 pairs) and Mixed doubles (16 pairs).

Venue: Riocentro - Pavilion 4 Riocentro - . It is within walking distance of the adjacent Olympic and Paralympic Village and within five minutes of the Rio Olympic Park Precinct and the IBC/MPC. The venue will also accommodate all Badminton training/practice

Qualification System in Detail approved by IOC (4 February 2014)

The BWF ranking list of 5 May 2016 will be used to allocate qualifing places until a total of 38 places in  each singles event and 16 places(pairs) in each doubles event including  the requirements of Regulations 3.3.1 to 3.3.14 .Read more on Olympic qualifying regulations
